World Wrestling Entertainment Enters Blockchain Partnership With Panini
The wrestling superstars are officially on the Panini blockchain
In a move that aims to perpetuate the growing wave of blockchain adoption, sports collectible company Panini has partnered with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to release Blockchain Donruss Elite WWE—the first official WWE cards on the Panini Blockchain.
The digital partnership features debut cards for over 100 WWE superstars, such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena and Rhea Ripley.
Collectors will have the opportunity to purchase digital packs and virtually “rip them open” for a chance at landing common or exclusive cards, and will be able to participate in online challenges to win cards not featured in packs.
Over the coming months, Panini plans to release other Blockchain WWE collections through its other umbrella brands, such as Prizm.
But it remains to be seen if the collection will take off. WWE previously launched a digital collection through Candy, the NFT sports platform, to limited success.
And while the Panini launch is the first official WWE drop with an established traditional card company, it will be interesting to see if the WWE fanbase is receptive to the concept of digital trading cards.
If it’s well received, the collection might provide a blueprint for other fringe sports interested in entering the digital space. But if it fails, it might be necessary to rethink the utility of the NFTs in order to provide fans with added incentives to collect.
