The Sandbox Makes Splash in Film Industry with Launch of Digital Cinematic Neighborhood
The intent is to disrupt and revolutionize the gaming and entertainment landscape
In a move that could redefine how audiences interact with traditional film and television, the decentralized gaming virtual world The Sandbox is giving its owners a chance to bring film and television ideas to life alongside some of the entertainment industry’s most established brands.
By collaborating with partners like Lionsgate, The Walking Dead, Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders, and Cheech and Chong, The Sandbox hopes to use its digital land to change the way creators think about and implement projects.
Users who own digital real estate within The Sandbox ecosystem—aka LAND—can acquire a piece of the digital Cinerama neighborhood, giving them the opportunity to share ideas, collaborate with brand partners and transform film and television concepts into interactive entertainment within the confines of The Sandbox’s digital ecosystem.
By allowing builders to create immersive experiences alongside well-known entertainment brands, filmmakers, storytellers and cinema enthusiasts can now take an active role in the movie-making process, which The Sandbox hopes will lead to development of movie-inspired universes.
"We are truly excited about the Cinerama LAND Sale, as it represents a significant milestone for The Sandbox,” said The Sandbox chief operating officer and co-founder Sebastien Borget. “With Cinerama, we are redefining the boundaries of immersive entertainment, and can't wait to see the incredible experiences our community will create."
By selling and auctioning off Cinerama LAND, The Sandbox is showing us a glimpse of how the next steps in immersive entertainment could look. Cinerama LAND owners will essentially have the digital tools to iterate on established IP to create something new and different, while at the same time, those creations will be buoyed by the marketing potential of the well-known existing IP brands.
While it remains to be seen if the new Sandbox LAND sale will lead to a film and television revolution, it’s definitely a step toward more immersive and interactive entertainment—a step, which if successful—could potentially pave the way for other digital ecosystems to explore film and television IP immersion amongst their entertainment builders and content creators.
